President Sadyr Zhaparov receives Secretary General of IFRC Jagan Chapagain

President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Zhaparov today received Secretary General of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) Jagan Chapagain, who is visiting Kyrgyzstan. Priority issues of bilateral cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and the IFRC, the organization of project activities in the country for the elimination of the consequences of natural disasters, humanitarian aid and social support, were discussed. The head of state congratulated Jagan Chapagain on his appointment as Secretary General for a second term and wished him success in his activities. In light of the increasing negative impact of global climate change on Kyrgyzstan, Sadyr Zhaparov emphasized the importance of close cooperation with the IFRC in the field of reducing damage from natural disasters and taking preventive measures to reduce the scale of emergency situations. The president, taking the opportunity, expressed gratitude to the federation for the assistance provided especially in the fight against COVID and to the residents of the Batken region, who suffered during the conflict with Tajikistan. In turn, Chapagain noted the relevance of the climate agenda for the activities of the IFRC in Kyrgyzstan, since in high-mountainous countries the consequences of climate change are felt earlier and more acutely than in most other countries of the world. He also informed the head of state about the strategic decision made to place the organization's regional office for Central Asia in Bishkek. In conclusion, the parties expressed their readiness for further close cooperation between the IFRC and Kyrgyzstan.
