Presidents of Turkmenistan and Afghanistan discuss priority aspects of cooperation over the phone

On a telephone conversation took place between President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and President of Afghanistan Mohammad Ashraf Ghani.

The heads of the two states singled out fuel and energy and transport and communication spheres as priority areas of partnership, where large-scale projects have been implemented in recent years, including the construction of the transnational gas pipeline Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI), the construction of a high-voltage power line and optical -Fiber communication on the route Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan.

According to the parties, the favorable geographical position of the two countries is of great importance for the implementation of strategically important infrastructure projects for the formation of new transit and transport corridors, including along the route Afghanistan-Turkmenistan-Azerbaijan-Georgia-Turkey (Lyapis Lazuli).

During a telephone conversation, the President of Turkmenistan supported the proposal of his Afghan counterpart to hold a trilateral meeting between the Presidents of Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and Azerbaijan in the form of a video conference. The agenda will include issues of increasing the efficiency of the transport corridor Lapis Lazuli.

The interlocutors also noted the need to develop a coordinated approach to solving pressing problems of our time, one of which is the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, which had a negative impact on international economic relations and the life of many states and peoples.

In this regard, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov expressed the readiness of Turkmenistan to build, as humanitarian aid, at the border railway stations, checkpoints and on the territory of Afghanistan, special terminal structures – similar to those built in Turkmenistan – for the disinfection of railway transport and goods, as well as providing these facilities with necessary equipment.

The measures taken by joint efforts will allow to achieve a high level of sanitary and epidemiological safety, to create conditions for the disinfection of vehicles and goods crossing the border.
