Presidents of Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan discussed by telephone issues of bilateral and regional cooperation

President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev discussed the development of bilateral and regional partnership during a telephone conversation.

The heads of the two neighboring countries identified among the priority areas of interaction the energy complex, the transport and transit sector, industry, investment, agriculture and the strengthening of direct business contacts. The sides noted the importance of intensifying the work of the joint Turkmen-Uzbek commission on trade, economic, scientific, technical and cultural cooperation.

The parties also exchanged views on topical issues of a regional and global agenda of mutual interest. In this regard, the presidents of Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan discussed preparations for the consultative meeting of the heads of state of Central Asia in the city of Tashkent on April 12, 2019. The leaders of the two states noted that the meeting should pay special attention to water diplomacy issues. The heads of Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan stressed that the rational use of water resources in the region is one of the urgent tasks facing the Central Asian countries today.

The interlocutors also exchanged views on the further development of the partnership within the framework of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea. At the same time, it was noted the need to consolidate the efforts of all stakeholders in the preparation of a special UN program for the countries of the Aral Sea basin and the implementation of the initiative to create a UN Trust Fund for Human Security for the Aral region.
