Tens of thousands of protesters on Saturday demanded President Park Geun-hye's resignation in massive rallies nationwide over a snowballing scandal involving her longtime confidant Choi Soon-sil.
The public anger appears to be growing even after the president issued her second apology over the scandal on Friday.
Progressive civic groups held a rally and cultural events at the Gwanghwamun Square in downtown Seoul at 4 p.m. Saturday.
The organizers estimated about 50-thousand people took part in the rally in the beginning, but the estimate increased to 100-thousand in less than an hour. The number of protesters who took part in a similar rally in Seoul a week ago was estimated at about 20-thousand.
In Busan, about three thousand citizens gathered at Busan Station square, calling for Park's resignation, while thousands of people and civic groups held similar candlelit rallies in Gwangju, Sejong, Jeongju and Jeju Island.
