Since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, more than 25,000 people have died from the coronavirus in Turkmenistan, Radio Azatlyk reports .
A radio source said that the velayats keep records of deaths from COVID-19 and this data is sent to the Ministry of Health on a daily basis. Most deaths were registered in Lebap and Mary velayats.
It is noted that in reality there may be more deaths, since the regional leaders, fearing the consequences, send underestimated figures to Ashgabat. In the testimonies of many who have died, doctors do not mention COVID-19 and indicate other causes of death, such as heart failure.
Earlier, in a commentary to the Chronicle of Turkmenistan, the doctor of the Ashgabat medical institution said that reliable statistics on the number of cases were not kept. Due to the fact that the government refuses to recognize the presence of infected people in the country, this is impossible.
In early October, with the support of UNDP, a Russian expert advised representatives of the Ministry of Health on the creation of an electronic register that will help determine the coverage of the vaccinated population and plan the supply of vaccines. This may indicate existing difficulties taking into account the vaccinated citizens.
