Baku: On the 2nd day of the Chovgan competition for the President Cup, organized by the Azerbaijan Equestrian Federation at the Bina Equestrian Center in Baku, Sarhadchi-Qarabag, Polad and Sarhadchi-Dilbaz teams became winners. In the first match, Sarhadchi-Garabag beat Kohlan 4-1, while in the second encounter, Polad defeated Shirvan scoring five unanswered goals. The third match of the day saw Sarhadchi-Dilbaz secure an impressive 5-1 win against Zafar. In another match Sunday, Omar were held to a 1-1 draw by Embawood. Chovgan competition for the President Cup will last until December 23. Chovgan is an Azerbaijani traditional horse-riding game played on a flat, grassy field by two competing teams of players mounted on Karabakh horses. A forerunner to polo, it involves 2 teams of 5 players in national dress riding Karabakh horses who compete to knock a small leather ball through the opposing team’s 3-metre-wide goalposts.
