The media outlet Sputnik-Georgia reported on 10 August 2018 that the Ambassador of Turkmenistan to Georgia Dovtelmurad Muratov told about the benefit of launching the air service between the two countries.
Muratov said that a large number of ethnic Armenians and ethnic Azerbaijan nationals reside in Turkmenistan. After the flight Ashgabat-Yerevan was launched, many people travel to Yerevan. However, ethnic Azeris cannot travel by air and have to use the ferry service. If we launch the flight, ethnic Azeris community of 400 thousand in Turkmenistan will be able to fly to Tbilisi. Georgia will serve as a transportation hub to connect Yerevan with Azerbajan without hurting national feelings.
It should be emphasized that according to 2010 data, some 52 thousand Azerbaijan nationals resided in Turkmenistan. It remains unclear where additional 348 thousand people came from.
Let us recall that the flight Ashgabat-Yerevan was launched in December 2017. The announcement on the launch of the flight Ashgabat-Tbilisi was made in October 2016 but it was not eventually launched. Turkmenistan makes occasional announcements on the opening of new flights the majority of which remain unfulfilled.
