Vladimir Putin announced the intention of the Gazprom leadership to visit Turkmenistan a month ago, during his visit to Ashgabat to participate in the VI Caspian Summit.

In 2019, Russia resumed imports of Turkmen gas after a four-year hiatus following claims by Turkmengas that accused Gazprom of Gazprom's insolvency. In response, Gazprom filed a lawsuit demanding a revision of prices for gas purchased from Turkmenistan and a refund of $5 billion for overpayment.
