The Interior Ministry officials deployed to trap stray animals in Ashgabat

Correspondents of Chronicles of Turkmenistan report that on 16 July district police officers along with law enforcement officials patrolling Ashgabat streets were verbally instructed by the Ministry of the Interior to trap and hand in 2 stray animals (cats or dogs), whether dead or alive, on a daily basis.

A police officer from Rukhabad etrap of Ashgabat says that the animals need to be handed over to a representative of the public utilities departments. These measures are being undertaken within the framework of campaign designed to clear away Ashgabat streets from stray dogs or cats.

The staff of public utilities department and house administration had been recently involved in the stray animal trapping campaign whereas now the Interior Ministry officials have been deployed.

It should be emphasized that at the backdrop of this news President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov is demonstrating affection towards cats and dogs. For instance, on 16 May the head of the state visited the border check point and presented the military personnel with puppies. During his holidays in mid July the staterun television channel showed a video footage with the President and his grandchildren playing with kittens.

Moreover, at the Cabinet session held on 15 February Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov instructed that a specialized vet clinic as well as an animal shelter be set up, which will be supported by the state.
