The President meets with a newly-appointed Ambassador of the EU to Turkmenistan

On President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov hosted a meeting with a newly-appointed Ambassador of the European Union to Turkmenistan Diego Ruiz Alonso, who handed over credential letters of the head of state.

The state information agency TDH reports that the President highlighted that the European vector is one of the key areas of Turkmenistan's foreign policy strategy and the relationship between Turkmenistan and the European community is gradually developing on a multilateral basis.

In the course of the meeting the sides agreed to intensify cooperation in such fields as environment protection, adjustment to climate change, economy digitalization, private sector support, water resources management, democratization of the society and human rights protection.

The media outlet reports that the diplomat announced that the European Union places hopes in effective collaboration with Turkmenistan.

Later the same day the Ambassador met with Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov.

On 10 February, 2020, pursuant to the Presidential decree the Ambassador of Turkmenistan to Belgium Chary Atayev was appointed the head of Turkmenistan's representation office under the European Union.

Let us recall that in March 2019 it transpired that the representation office of the European Union was scheduled to be opened in Ashgabat.

Chronicles of Turkmenistan reported in September 2019 that the European Union nominated Ruiz Alonso as the head of its representation office. At that time Alonso occupied the post of the head of the department for the CIS countries in the Embassy of Spain in Moscow.
