The President of Turkmenistan departs to New York to attend the UN General Assembly session

On 25 September the President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov headed to New York to attend the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly.

The state information agency TDH reports that in the framework of the visit the delegation of Turkmenistan is scheduled to hold several bilateral and multilateral meetings, including in the format of the Turkmen-US business council.

In September 2018 Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov, who holds a Ph.D. degree in Economics, authored a book devoted to cooperation with the UN.

A global coalition of human rights activists Cotton Campaign, which is dedicated to eradicating child and forced labor in cotton production, intends to arrange a protest action in the run-up to President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov's visit to New York.

On 12 September the news outlet Reuters reported that pursuant to the report by the UN Secretary- General Antonio Guterres, Turkmenistan is listed among 38 countries which carried out reprisals of residents for cooperating with international organizations, including the UN, on human rights.
