The President points to reduced foreign trade turnover and orders increasing domestic goods volume

At the Cabinet session held on 12 October President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov pointed out that foreign trade turnover has slightly decreased and authorized trade officials to address the issue of providing Turkmenistan's residents with high quality goods and groceries.

The state information agency TDH reports that in the run-up to holidays and sports events (Ashgabat is scheduled to host the World WeightliftingChampionship from 1 to 10 November), the head of the state instructed that abundance of consumer goods and groceries be ensured at Turkmen markets and stores.

According to the news outlet, the President ordered increasing export volumes and manufacturing import substitution products.

It should be mentioned that in recent months the country has been experiencing a deficit of basic food products. In the run-up to the Khalk Maslakhaty session and the Day of Independence, as well as with a view of fulfilling Berdymukhammedov's instruction to fill store counters with groceries in abundance ahead of the holidays, cheap groceries, which are sold with restrictions, appeared at Turkmen markets, but sold out quickly.

The IMF experts who visited Turkmenistan in early October emphasizedthat external imbalances (imports of goods and services exceed exports) have declined owing to higher hydrocarbon prices and economic policies aimed at reducing imports and promoting exports, yet further steps to address the imbalances are needed.
