On 28 May the state information agency TDH reported that the state funding for education will be increased in the 2020 budget.
However, according to correspondents of Chronicles of Turkmenistan, in the run-up to the end of the academic year students of Lebap velayat secondary schools were requested to reimburse the cost of lost textbooks, which is a new practice.
Each textbook is estimated at 70 manats and parents need to pay to a school library. In case of a refusal, a court proceeding might be initiated and according to school principals, apart from the cost of books parents will have to cover court fees and to pay a fine.
Parents of schoolchildren from school 29 in the city of Sayat told the correspondent of Chronicles of Turkmenistan that they had been notified about the new requirement by the school principal, who, in turn, had been informed by the executive of the etrap (district) education board.
For the time being textbooks are distributed among students free of charge.
