The United States has classified Turkmenistan, Russia and Tajikistan in the list of countries “flagrantly” violating religious freedom

The United States classified Turkmenistan as one of 10 countries of particular concern due to the fact that it "systematically and flagrantly violates religious freedom." This is stated in the statement published on November 17 by the US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken .

From the region, Tajikistan and Russia are included in this list. In addition to these countries, the list includes Burma, China, Eritrea, Iran, North Korea, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.

“We will continue to insist on correcting shortcomings in [these countries'] laws and practices, and on bringing those responsible for violations to justice. The United States remains committed to working with members and civil society organizations to advance religious freedoms around the world and to address the plight of individuals and communities facing abuse, harassment, and discrimination because of what they believe or not. believe, ”the document says.

In December 2020, the State Department listed Turkmenistan in the top ten countries of particular concern in the area of violations of religious freedoms.

In 2019, the State Department also classified Turkmenistan as one of the countries of particular concern due to the ongoing systematic flagrant violations of citizens' freedom of religion.
