On the last Sunday of May, Turkmenistan celebrates a national holiday - the Day of the Turkmen Carpet.
On the eve of the holiday, on May 26, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov decided to confer the honorary title of "Honored Carpet Weaver of Turkmenistan" to 11 women, whose names were listed by the state news agency TDH .
At the same time, the TDH separately published the news that the skilled carpet weaver Ogulgerek Berdimuhamedova was awarded the honorary title “Türkmenistanyn at gazanan halyçysy” (“Honored Carpet Weaver of Turkmenistan”). The corresponding decree was signed not by the head of state, but by the chairman of the Mejlis (lower house of parliament) Gulshat Mammedova .
The publication writes that “Ogulgerek Berdimuhamedova is one of the skilled carpet weavers who made a worthy contribution to the development, improvement, and communication to future generations of the Turkmen art of carpet weaving.”
It is also reported that “for many years she worked flawlessly at the carpet factory in the city of Geoktepe, Akhal velayat, applying her rich experience in using unique technologies in the art of carpet weaving, showed skill in making carpets with classic gels and carpet portraits, won great prestige as a skilled carpet weaver , which is an example for young people with its skill and diligence.
The title was directly awarded "taking into account the merits in strengthening the independence and sovereignty of Turkmenistan , the development of the national art of carpet weaving, decorating carpets with magnificent patterns and many years of hard and conscientious work, professional skills."
Ogulgerek Berdimuhamedova is the former first lady of Turkmenistan, the wife of the current chairman of the Halk Maslakhaty, Milli Gengesh Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov , and the mother of the current head of state, Serdar Berdimuhamedov . Last fall, when Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan visited Turkmenistan with his wife Emine Erdogan , her photo appeared in the media for the first time.
