This Year’s Rice Production Slips 3% from 2015

Heavy rain has put a damper on South Korean rice production this year.

Statistics Korea said Tuesday the country produced 130-thousand fewer tons of rice this year than at the same time last year. That's a drop of about three percent.

However, the longer term trend is up -- rice production this year is 241-thousand tons higher than the four year average between 2011 and 2015.

Delays in harvesting rice due to Typhoon Chaba put a dent in production.

So did the construction of housing on land that would otherwise have been used to grow rice.
