To put out the “Gates of Hell”, a scientific conference will be convened in Turkmenistan

On June 23, Ashgabat will host the International Scientific Conference "Reducing emissions into the environment in the conditions of hydrocarbon production and prospects for managing the Darvaza gas crater." This was reported on May 6 by Orient.

The event was organized by the Turkmen Forum company in cooperation with national oil companies and is dedicated to environmental issues in the development of oil and gas fields.

It is planned that the conference will be held annually to discuss the environmental problems facing the oil and gas sector of Turkmenistan, as well as to strengthen international cooperation.

• In January, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov ordered the Darvaza crater to be extinguished, as huge amounts of gas have been burned there for many years, which negatively affects the environment and the health of people living nearby.

• In March, EBRD President Odile Renaud-Basso wrote in a letter to the President that the European Bank would provide design studies services to extinguish the Darvaza gas crater in the Karakum desert.

• At a January meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov reported to Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov on the development of a certain document that provides for measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Turkmenistan by 2030.

• In October last year, Bloomberg reported that in terms of methane emissions into the atmosphere, Turkmenistan is second only to the United States and Russia.
