Baku: The trial of Ruben Vardanyan, an Armenian citizen facing charges of crimes against peace and humanity, terrorism, and other severe offenses under the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan, proceeded at the Baku Military Court. The court session, presided over by Judge Zeynal Agayev, along with judges Anar Rzayev and Jamal Ramazanov, ensured that Vardanyan had access to a Russian interpreter and legal representation of his choice.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Vardanyan contested the composition of the judicial panel, a move supported by his lawyer, Avraam Berman. State Prosecutor Tarana Mammadova dismissed the objection, citing a lack of evidence that the judicial panel was biased. The victims at the trial also requested the dismissal of the objection. The court ultimately rejected the objection after deliberation, with Judge Agayev noting the absence of concrete evidence from the defense.
During the trial, victims recounted their injuries. Emil Mehtiyev testified about being wounded by a mortar shell in Aghdara, highlighting injuries sustained by his companions, Ismail Gambarov and Amin Maharramov. Mayis Korogluyev shared his experience of being harmed by a missile in Aghdam, while Asim Garayev detailed injuries from a mortar shell. Victims also described fatalities, including Mehdi Abbasov and others, during the attacks.
The court presented forensic medical examination results of the victims, and the next session is set for May 20. Vardanyan's charges span multiple articles of Azerbaijan's Criminal Code, including war crimes, terrorism, and other serious violations, reflecting the gravity of the allegations against him.
