Turkmen activist released from deportation camp in Turkey

On March 31, in the Turkish city of Izmir, a court ruled to release Turkmen activist Vep Orazmukhammedov from a deportation camp , the Turkmen Helsinki Foundation reports.

Orazmukhammedov was detained in the city of Konya in October 2021 at the request of Interpol under code number 87. This request was sent to Interpol by the authorities of Turkmenistan. Human rights activists are sure that the Turkmen side was dissatisfied with the participation of the activist in opposition chats and video meetings broadcast via YouTube.

Ashgabat has previously used Interpol channels to persecute a number of other peaceful political activists, the THF recalls.

Orazmukhammedov's relatives, who live in Turkmenistan, have repeatedly received threats from intelligence officers who demanded to convince Vep to stop his activist activities.

On March 18, the activist was transferred from Konya to the Izmir deportation camp. The court decision noted that if the Turkish authorities did not find grounds for his deportation during the 4 months and 20 days that the man spent in custody, then the initial decision on administrative supervision of the Migration Services Department should be canceled.

Since 2019, Vepa Orazmukhammedov, without hiding his identity, has been recording videos talking about the problems of Turkmen citizens.
