The Young Ambassadors of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Leyli Yagshyyeva and Dovran Shammyyev of Turkmenistan became part of the Regional Workshop on Youth Environmental Activism, which took place in Istanbul.
The workshop is organized by the Regional Office of the United Nations Development Program located in Istanbul. It brought together over 40 ambitious young people from Europe and the CIS, providing them with a platform to share experience and knowledge in the field of environmental activism, increase regional cooperation among young people in the field of environmental protection and combating climate change.
Discussions at the event were held in the form of group discussions for the exchange of experience and knowledge of the youth of the region, presentations of joint projects of young activists and UNDP staff in the field of environment and climate change. Finally, a meeting of UNDP staff was held to discuss the outcome of the event and next steps to empower youth.
It is expected that the seminar will contribute to the development of regional and transboundary cooperation in the field of environment and climate change, will make a significant contribution to the development of a regional UNDP strategy to empower youth throughout the region.
In the Europe and CIS region, youth movements and activism have played a prominent role in protecting the environment, calling on all countries to take action to prevent conflict, mitigate climate change and maintain peace and stability. At the global level, the Global Conference of Youth (GCOY) is held, organized by YOUNGO, the official corps of youth non-governmental organizations that are members of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
It should be noted that last year, on the eve of the Youth Conference (COY16) and the 26th session of the Conference of Parties (COP26) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in Glasgow, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, together with the British Embassy, the Office of the UN Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan, organized the first Youth conference on climate change in Turkmenistan. It provided a forum for sharing knowledge and experiences and stimulating discussion among young climate change activists.
Also, as part of efforts to promote youth environmental activism in Turkmenistan, in February of this year, UNDP held a meeting with young environmental activists in the country with the aim of involving youth in initiatives to increase environmental awareness and encourage environmentally sustainable behavior among the population.
