Turkmen delegates refuse to talk to human rights activists at OSCE human rights conference in Warsaw

Since September 26, Warsaw has been hosting the annual OSCE Human Dimension Conference dedicated to human rights.

An official delegation from Turkmenistan arrived in Poland to participate in the meeting. As a rule, Turkmen officials avoid contact with activists and human rights activists, limiting themselves to reading out a report during a meeting.

According to the Turkmen Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights (THF), the same thing happened this year. On September 27, a representative of the Foundation, Tajigul Begmedova, tried to speak with the head of the delegation from Turkmenistan , Shemshat Atajanova , but she refused to talk, saying that another member of the delegation, Baily Seyilov , decides organizational issues , was in charge of organizational issues . However, Seyilov also refused to talk, “having hastily retired.”

Activist Nurmukhammed Annaev also tried to talk to representatives of Turkmenistan on the street . As the THF writes, according to the activist, filming what was happening on video, he began to persistently ask questions about the human rights situation in the country, but the delegates ignored him.

Seyilov returned to the building and, asking for the help of the guards, began to demand that the video be removed. “You Turkmens will fulfill our demands in Europe as well,” said a delegate from Turkmenistan and insisted that the guards call the police.

Five police officers who came to the call, threatening with arrest, nevertheless forced Annaev to delete the video.

The press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan reported that in their speech on September 26, the official Turkmen delegates spoke about the achievements of democracy, human rights, and democratic institutions in Turkmenistan. Achievements include the adoption of new laws and “other positive developments”.
