Turkmen farmers stripped of irrigation pumps

Due to a shortage of irrigation water the authorities are confiscating pumps from residents of Dashoguz velayat, which are used to pump out water from canals for their plots of land, correspondents of Chronicles of Turkmenistan report.

In an attempt to supplement the family budget many rural inhabitants used to grow the second crops on their plots of land before cold weather set in. As farmers sow cotton and wheat, which does not generate big revenue, but are grown at the request of the authorities, people are urged to grow other crops, for instance, early season carrots.

However, this year the farmers failed to grow the aftercrop. The local authorities prevented them from watering plots of lands and confiscated pumps. In case of violations, tractors were deployed to plow up vegetable gardens. This resulted in numerous conflicts and even fights which broke out between the residents and executives of farming associations.

Chronicles of Turkmenistan has previously reported that rice fields had been re-plowed because of the shortage of irrigation water.
