Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan to create intergovernmental Commission on transport cooperation

President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov instructed to take steps to create an intergovernmental Turkmen-Azerbaijani Commission to discuss issues of cooperation in the field of transport, detailed study and timely solution of all relevant tasks.

This instruction was given during the meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan last week.

The head of the Turkmen state emphasized the importance of the creation of the Lazurit international transport and transit corridor, which, passing through the territory of Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey, will contribute to the strengthening of productive cooperation in the wide geo-economic space, including the regions of Central and South Asia, the Caspian and black sea basins, the Mediterranean.

The President also noted that Turkmenistan is ready to act as an active partner and participant of the Europe-Caucasus-Asia (TRACECA) program, since the formation of the Western transport corridor from Central Asia plays a huge role in the context of the implementation of the objectives of the revival of the great silk road.

On Monday, during a video conference call with a number of Deputy Prime Ministers held by the President of Turkmenistan, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers M. Chakyev, in particular, reported on the preparations for the international conference on the Lazurit corridor (Afghanistan-Turkmenistan-Azerbaijan-Georgia-Turkey-Europe) in Turkmenbashi.

Having heard the report, the head of state noted that at present the importance of Turkmenistan as a transit and transport hub is growing, railway and road communication in the North-South direction has significantly increased.
