Turkmenistan has introduced limits on water use in agriculture

At a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers on February 1, the president signed a decree approving the plan for zoning agricultural crops for velayats and an order approving water use limits for velayats and etraps.

According to the state news agency TDH , the information was sounded that the volumes of production in the velayats of potatoesand other vegetables, as well as the limits of water use , were determined . Exact numbers were not named.

The State Committee on Water Resources, established on January 29, will deal with issues of water supply for agriculture and the population .

The distribution of crops by their species will be carried out in accordance with the soil and climatic conditions of velayats and etraps.

TDH reports that in 2019 the total area of land allocated for growing crops in the country will be 1 million 372 thousand 162 hectares. The production volumes in the regions of potatoes and other vegetables were determined. 550 thousand hectares are allocated for cotton this year.

Note, Turkmenistan has a sharply continental and extremely dry desert climate. Drought is almost constant throughout the country .

For example, in 2018, hot weather and low water conditions led to the death of rice crops . Due to the lack of irrigation water in many regions there was a poor harvest of cotton .
