Turkmenistan proposes to expedite the opening of the office of the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism in Ashgabat

On January 28, an online meeting was held between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov and the UN Under-Secretary-General, head of the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism (OCT) Vladimir Voronkov .

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, the parties discussed the implementation of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy at the regional level, based on the provisions of the Ashgabat Declaration of 2011 and the Joint Plan of Action to Combat Terrorism in Central Asia.

An updated Joint Action Plan was also considered, which will be presented on March 3-4 in Tashkent during the International Conference dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the implementation of the Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy in Central Asia.

The Turkmen side invited the UNCT to intensify its work and consider possible formats for the Program Office of the Counter-Terrorism Directorate in Ashgabat.

Rashid Meredov proposed to open the UNOCT office in Ashgabat in August 2021.

In November, during the previous meeting of the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan with Voronkov, the parties discussed the joint study of the complex causes of the emergence of terrorism and the exchange of expert skills for taking preventive measures.
