Bezirgen Karayev, aide to the Chairperson of Turkmenistan’s Central Election Commission, has told RIA Novosti that an early Presidential Election in Turkmenistan will be held on 12 March, 2022.
The Central Election and Referendum Commission in Turkmenistan confirmed that the elections will be held on 12 March.
On 11 February an ad-hoc session of Halk Maslahaty (the upper house of Turkmenistan’s Parlaiment) devoted to Turkmenistan’s development for the next 30 years was held, in the course of which the incumbent President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov said he had made “a tough decision” and decided that it was time to give way to “young leaders” in the running of the state.
The President of Turkmenistan then emphasized that this proposal voiced during the forum had been supported. In this connection the Chairperson of the Central Election and Referendum Commission was instructed to launch preparation work pursuant to the Constitution and laws of Turkmenistan, according to the state-run news agency TDH.
In addition, “in line with great objectives”, Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov put forward a proposal to call the next period in Turkmenistan’s development “the revival of a new epoch of the powerful state”. Let us recall that the “the epoch of power and happiness, which began in February 2012, is ongoing in Turkmenistan.
The head of state did not announce his successor but his son Serdar Berdymukhammedov is seen as a likely successor.
