UN experts assess Turkmenistan’s progress in implementing Sustainable Development Goals

The Ministry of Economy and Development has hosted a meeting of UN representatives and specialists from ministries and agencies of Turkmenistan to discuss social indicators of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

It is one of the series of meetings, co-organized by international expert on monitoring the SDGs Gereltuya Altankhuyag, who arrived on a working visit to hold consultations with the Government of Turkmenistan, and the UN Country Group on the SDGs integrated into the ongoing national socio-economic programs.

Meeting participants have highlighted the need to take a comprehensive approach to collective actions at all levels to implement the post-2015 UN Sustainable Development Agenda in line with the states’ commitments to international rules. This also involves designing a system for measuring progress towards the SDGs at ministries and agencies, including, the State Statistics Committee.

The meeting discussed the outcomes of the work done to analyze the statistical data, explored mechanisms for inter-sectoral interaction and the ways of improving the system of national institutions responsible for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals adapted to the national context and integrated into Turkmenistan’s state policy.

Among those attending the meeting were representatives of the State Statistics Committee, some ministries of Turkmenistan, including the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Agriculture and Water Economy, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Economy and Development, State Committee for Environment Protection and Land Resources, Turkmen National Institute for Democracy and Human Rights under the President of Turkmenistan.

The meeting was also attended by specialists of the UNDP, UNICEF and WHO.
