NEW YORK, The UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) on Wednesday announced the #WithRefugees World Tour to raise awareness and enhance action for people forced to flee conflicts or persecution, China's Xinhua news agency reported.
Stephane Dujarric, the spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said the tour will kick off on Friday with a sports day at Za'atari refugee camp in Jordan, featuring international athletes, including modern pentathlete Aya Medani of Egypt.
Other events on the tour include a fashion show in Chicago featuring fabric made by refugees in Kenya, a football match in Ireland, a photography exhibition in Paris, a week of events on Jeju Island, South Korea and judo competitions and workshops in South Africa.
The tour will end on October 1 with the Nansen Refugee Award Ceremony in Geneva, Dujarric told a daily press briefing.
Some 65.6 million people are either refugees, asylum seekers or internally displaced across the globe.
