A round table was held in Ashgabat on the issues of Turkmenistan's accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO), "Turkmenistan: Golden Age" reported on June 16.
The event was held for members of the government commission to study issues related to Turkmenistan's accession to the WTO, as well as for representatives of relevant ministries and departments as part of a joint project of the Ministry of Finance and UNDP.
During the meeting, Maxim Medvedkov , adviser of the Center of Expertise on WTO issues of Russia, acquainted the participants with the draft Roadmap - an action plan for preparing for Turkmenistan's accession to the WTO and bringing legislation in line with WTO requirements for 2022-2025.
Recall that in December last year, an online seminar organized by the OSCE Center was held in Ashgabat on the topic of improving Turkmen legislation in accordance with the requirements of the WTO .
In September 2020, the OSCE held a seminar on the theme "Membership in the WTO as a balance of rights and obligations". Its purpose was to assist in the further improvement of national trade policy.
In February, WTO members agreed to set up a working group on Turkmenistan's accession to the organization.
On November 25, 2021, Turkmenistan applied for WTO accession.
In July 2020, Turkmenistan received observer status in the organization. The full accession of the country to the WTO is provided for in the Foreign Trade Strategy for 2021-2030.
Turkmenistan has been discussing the issue of membership in a trade organization since 2016. The country's authorities expect that this will attract foreign investment and provide guarantees and transparency for investors.
