"It has been decided to restore the level of diplomatic relations with Canada to its previous state," the ministry stated, noting the decision came following last year's talks between Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The ties between Saudi Arabia and Canada suffered a blow in 2018 after Riyadh expelled the Canadian ambassador and froze all trade with Ottawa in response to the country's criticism of the kingdom for arresting a blogger critical of the government, Raif Badawi, and his sister, Samar Badawi, a human rights activist.
